We Can Actually Use First Aid We cannot predict anything, we can never tell when an accident will occur, but there is one thing for sure, we can prevent added injury or pain if we know how to demonstrate first aid. Last January 15, 2013, we have our guest speaker in the class to discuss and help us with the basic knowledge about first aid. The simple discussion helped us learn the importance of first aid and how we can use it in the future. Saving a personà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s life is the most important thing why we should learn first aid. When there is an accident and there is no one there to help out the victim, you can perform the first aid to alleviate the suffering and prevent the victim from having serious damages when treatment or help is not yet present. First aid also serves as the bridge that fills the gap between the sick and the physician so we should be the middle man who will secure that the victim would feel less in pain and would check his/her condition by observing the blood pressure, breathing, pulse rate and temperature. Every second or every minute counts after the victim have encountered the accident thatà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s why he/she should be attended in the quickest time as possible. We can actually use first aid in many simple ways and by performing the first aid properly. And as medical biology students and maybe future doctors, it is very useful for us to know the basics of first aid because we can definitely use it in case of emergencies to give a victim some medical attention. So for us to practice how we can use first aid, our guest speaker and our professor site us a situation wherein a boy was injured in his arm after he fell on the ground when heà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s trying to change the light bulb. Given that we have some materials like: handkerchief, cardboard, ruler, belt, strips of cloth and masking tape at first we donà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½t really know how we should start and how we should do it but then we properly managed it. We tried to wrap the handkerchief around our classmatesà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ arm but its length was a bit short so we decided to use the belt and replace the handkerchief then we put some bandage around his arm and use the ruler and the cardboard to straight his arm and whoala! we actually performed a first aid. Our group didnà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½t win but our guest praised us because our group was resourceful to use a belt instead of the handkerchief. We donà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½t have to always bring our first aid kit because we can always be resourceful and use things around us to save a life. Life is very important to people and there is no rule saying that we should not help people right? Even if we donà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½t know the person suffering from an injury or an accident we can always give a helping hand to that person and give some first aid to give a temporary hand care. Just like what the Good Samaritan did to the Levi? who was beaten in the road. Maybe if you help a victim in need you will be his/her savior for saving his life from near death experience or maybe youà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ll be the next Good Samaritan. If you know the true meaning and the importance of first aid you can definitely use it and save a personà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s life. Our English professor asked us to write an essay about our experiences during the first aid lecture and the activity of using household items to give first aid to the injured as instructed by our professor. First aid is a must for us students of Medical Biology because it is related to our course and our future profession as Medical doctors. And because this essay is a requirement to pass this subject, we are obliged to do it. The first thing that we did is the first aid lecture. Our professor invited a guest speaker to talk about first aid. This lecture covers the definition of first aid, its objectives, doà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s and dontà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s of doing first aid, some tricks in saving oneà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s life and the ABCà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s of life. This lecture can come in handy when someone needs help. Honestly, the lecture is informative but also boring. The speakerà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s approach in lecturing was so boring that I felt that everyone in the classroom is half dead while listening to the speaker. Good thing that I managed to stay awake while listening to the lecture. After our lecture, our professor challenges us to put our skills to the test. He first asked one of the members from each group to be the à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½main actor/actressà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½. I doubt that statement because I knew that this person will be subjected to slight discomfort and probably humiliation while doing the activity. Thinking that way, I decided that I donà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½t want to do it. But my fellow members forced me to volunteer. Someone has to do it right? So I ended up doing it. After that, our professor gave this situation: Supposedly I fell down from the chair while changing the light bulb with my left arm first. I winced in pain and my left arm maybe broken. So using the materials provided, my fellow members will give me first aid treatment for 10 minutes. And we started this chaos. They wrapped my left arm with bandage; straighten my left arm with a ruler and a stick, serving as a support for it to immobilize my arm. Then they use a leather belt that hangs from my neck to the injured arm as a support. I felt like I was a dress-up doll and twisted in awkward positions while giving me the first aid treatment. So much for top-notch care and gentle movements. It was, for me, an awkward moment. Then, the presentation of the output comes. The four main actors goes in front of the class and shows off what they have done. As I look to the other people, one thingà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s for sure, we all look like fools. Then the guest speaker judged the output. But in the e nd, we lost. But we still gain experience and a few laughs while doing the activity. In life we really not know what are going to be happening. Because in life we cannot predict the future only one Man can, what if we are riding in a plane then suddenly a one passenger experience difficulty in breathing or something? You are in a park with your brother or sister then a child fell on the monkey bar and broke his or her arm? What are you going to do? These are the example of the many situations why first à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ aid is important and why should we learn how to practice it. Weà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve lectured about first Aid in our class; and in that lecture we learned why First Aid is important in our daily living. First à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ aid is define as the immediate and temporary aid provided to a sick or injured person until medical treatment can be provided. First Aid is important in several reasons; it serves us the temporary treatment to a certain victim. It is done to make the situation lighter or to help the victim feel less pain and suffering by knowing his or her vital signs to his or her heartbeat First aid also helps to prevent further danger to come and risks of the life span of the victim and more importantly with a simple hand you will learn how to save someone life. As Medical Biology students and a soon to be doctors we should know how to practice first aid. On the activity weà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve done there is a certain situation and we should practice first aid in one of our group mates with the materials we have assigned to brinkg like ruler, piece of cloth, masking tape and scissors. We have no idea what we are doing we just wrap the piece of cloth with a ruler with my classmateà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s arm because in the situation the person fell from the chair so we think that he or she might broke his arm. The other groups did the same technique. I think what if this happen in real life? And we are in our white uniform there is a situation that needs first aid it is given that we should have the experience doing it but what if we are not? So this explains why we should learn how to practice first aid, from the simple CPR to save a drowning friend to the heavy situations of people meeting accidents having fractured bones. It can be an advantage to us Pre Med students to have the knowledge and the strong ability to learn how to practice first aid and use it to help other people. Having to contain the ability of helping people in a crucial danger situations, Helping them reduce their suffering and helping save someoneà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s life; this thoughts make First Aid important so we should practice it because in this world we are living we are clueless of what bad or good things will happen, we all know that Life really are full of challenging surprises.

Animal Farm Essay Throughout history, leadership plays an effective role upon millions of citizens in the world. Most societies refer to a leader as a person that attains the characteristics of goodness and virtue. However, leadership also results in negative aspects that later result in dictatorship, in which followers act destructively. Dictatorships usually rise to power in a time of social, political, and economic upheaval. In his novel, Animal Farm, George Orwell uses animal symbolism to relate the events that take place on Animal Farm with the events in the Russian Revolution through the usage of character behavior. An ambition for superior leadership and domination leads to deceit and cruelty that then introduces an eager atmosphere among incompetent followers to feel constructive and significant explicitly depicts the downfall of freedom and equality in Animal Farm. Napoleon emerges as a corrupt opportunist who declares himself the leader of Animal Farm. As Napoleon continues to rise in power of all the animals within the farm he soon starts to treat the animals with brutality. After the animals admit they occasionally associate with the enemy of Animal Farm, Snowball, â€Å"†¦they were all slain on the spot. And so the tale of confessions went on, until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon’s feet, and the air was heavy with the smell of blood, which had been unknown since the expulsion of Jones† (Orwell 93). Napoleon tells the animals that they live in freedom; however, Napoleon’s hunger for total leadership and power abruptly transforms into dictatorship, and the animals cease to have the right to rebel for what they believe. Thus, the animals continuously undergo mistreatment from Napoleon, in which this causes the animals to grow weak and miserable due to the fact that he has complete control over their life. As Napoleon continues to develop a manipulating attitude, the animals in the farm endure severe punishment if they do not meet the expectations of Napoleon’s rules, so he establishes, â€Å"†¦he ordered the hens’ rations to be stopped, and decreed that any animal giving so much as a grain of corn to hen should be punished by death† (Orwell 87). Napoleon’s negative leadership results into more cruelty that leads to the downfall of freedom and equality because the animals no longer owns their own autonomy to change the aspects of Animal Farm. Consequently, animal rights on Animal Farm quickly diminish as Napoleon gains more control and respect over the animals. As years pass Napoleon still remains in control of Animal Farm and he decides to change the name of the farm back to Manor Farm. Napoleon never asks the animals for their consent on this change, and unexpectedly the animals find out, â€Å"all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others† (Orwell 133). As the animals examine Napoleon, they realize that he figuratively transforms into a human. Unfortunately, the animals could no longer act against his transformation, because his change allows all the animals to view his deceitfulness and come to realization that he never actually grants them with their equality. Therefore, the animals live under the exploitation of Napoleon so intently; his control prevents them from rebelling, however, the animals remain unaware of the assistance Napoleon receives in dictating the farm. Squealer provides Napoleon with a trustworthy follower, and plays a major role in the dictatorship of Napoleon. Squealer also acts as the propagandist of all the animals, and the pigs bestow on him the task of persuading the animals' negative opinions of Napoleon to positive. As the pigs move into the farmhouse, Squealer assures the animals that, â€Å"†¦it was absolutely necessary, he said, that the pigs who were the brains of the farm, should have a quiet place to work in† (Orwell 79). Squealer convinces the animals of Animal Farm to believe and follow Napoleon, by doing this Squealer achieves inner pride in the belief that he too prevails to seem just as productive to the rest of the animals as they view Napoleon. Squealer incessantly makes up for Napoleon's inability to give dynamic speeches, because Napoleon’s manipulation toward the whole farm works on everyone, especially Squealer, because without the help of Squealer the animals would have no other reliable source to believe, therefore, Squealer accommodates Napoleon in the prevention of animal rights. During the cold winter, the reduction of rations starts, but Squealer assures the animals, â€Å"†¦that on the contrary to the principles of Animalism this was positive. He had no difficulty in proving to the animals that they were not really short of food, no matter what the appearances may be† (Orwell 115). Squealer never fails to justify the commands of Napoleons by rationalizing them to the less intelligent animals. Without the manipulation of Squealer, the realization of the animals that Animalism no longer exists under Napoleon in doubt becomes clearer. Squealer himself remains weak in character but he assumes a sense of responsibility and power by performing the tasks for Napoleon. Therefore, the actions of Squealer also commit to the causes of the defeat of animal freedom and equality among the farm, and the animals remain under the control of the dominant leader Napoleon, and the rest of the pigs of the farm. All types of leadership exist in the world, but great leadership determines on the actions of the person in power. Napoleon overall exhibits himself as a destructive leader that commits cruel and deceitful actions in order to prevent the animals from gaining their rightful privileges of freedom and equality. Followers such as Squealer allow the dictatorship of Napoleon to continue, and the lives of the animals become worse than they had under the control of the humans. The animals give their freedom to Napoleon and continue to work for him, under his demanding rules and laws. Thus, the degree of leadership not only emits to the person in power, but also to the follower, for both the leader and follower alike the burdens of self-restraint. Works Cited Orwell, George. How Emotions Affect Our Communication Skills Essay

Emotions are a funny thing. Whether or not you’re an ardent believer of emotions make or break a man, I think that lines stands true. Emotions can make us sail in the colors of being so pleasant at one time while another sort of emotion can wreck a man’s image as being barbaric. Just to figure this concept out, I undertook the assignment to see how emotions affect me on a personal communication level. To keep a close watch on my emotions for a few days was a task I was rather excited about! The first ‘official’ emotion I felt according to my journal was of happiness. I had woken up the first day or my college and felt an unbelievable excitement about what the day was going to entail. I got dressed humming my favorite song and off to college I was. Just by feeling a very happy person I knew the day was going to be an amazing one. Obviously, when you’re beaming with the joy, nothing can possibly bring you down. I was shocked at confidence I felt when I was content in my own skin. I greeted new people, in the new atmosphere and basically made quite a few friends. The whole day I felt like I was an energy ball and I was willing to sit in the front row of class, not afraid to listen and question the teacher. I actually thought that my positive energy sent out great vibes to the others also as they were not hesitant in carrying the conversation along with me. And the teachers were more than eager to answer my inquisitiveness. That only made me happier. I took part in a debate the next day. Not an official one but a sort of an unofficial debate with some college students at the local cafeteria. The debate was about ‘Terrorism can’t be uprooted at the expense of Civilian lives†. The talk was about a controversial topic and I was one of the few people who were agreeing with the topic. I soon realized that the people on the opposite team were talking purely without any reasoning. That registered another feeling in me†¦the bad feeling†¦of anger. I saw my enthusiasm evaporating and being replaced by mild irritation. In my mind I kept wondering how people could think so wrong. Before I had a chance to speak out, some of the debaters concluded the debate and childishly dances around thinking they had won. I was furious. That is the exact emotion I had put down in my journal. But that is when somebody out of the â€Å"against the topic† crowd came up to me and acknowledged my views on the subject. She seemed like someone I could talk to because she sort of â€Å"had my back† per say. She was willing to sit there and listen to me view. She nodded as I spoke and later on told me how I had managed to erase the wrong views from her mind. I was overwhelmed. Someone’s sincerity had cleared up my earlier anger. I felt like I could trust that girl. She became my good friend instantly because when the trust factor plays its positive role, the communication takes another height. I talked to her freely throughout the day and I was amazed to find out we just connected on a very high level. I had found somebody I could trust(Meyer, 2002). I wasn’t sure what the next big emotion I would feel until I got a call from my uncle in telling me he wasn’t coming to visit me and my family due some issues with his business. He had been planning his visit from South Africa since the last 2 years. His whole family was supposed to come and stay with us for a month. I felt dejected. After he had told me the news, I phoned my parents to talk to them about the sadness but understood his reasoning. They were as disappointed as I was so we talked about how much we miss him. I communicated freely with my mother who explained to me that perhaps we could go and visit him. It made feel lighter if not better. That day when I came into contact with my college fellows, I wasn’t the usual cheery girl as I always had been. The communication skills that day were strained, I realized. I didn’t really talk to anyone more than the usual greetings. As soon as my friend from the debating group came to me, I knew she could transgress the limits I had set around myself that day. And so she did. Just because with her I felt a bond of trust, I confessed everything to her when she probed why I looked so down. I leaned on her and she stood by me trying to be a good friend. By analyzing my emotions led communication skills, I can conclude that they have a major part in our everyday lives. Knowing how to control emotions is a bigger task though because emotions don’t always allow us to think clearly. Whatever we feel, we ought to keep it in tight check and be realistic about it.
